My 5-Year Plan

I had something of a life-altering epiphanizing event recently. Lots of fallout, but the relevant upside is a restructuring of my work ethic. Namely, while I am unemployed and searching out work, I will pretend like I am employed. This means working 40 hours a week, every week.

Here are things which count as work:

1. This blog! Updates should occur much more frequently, especially if I stop holding posts to such a standard that they take an entire week to complete. I've got an idea for a new recurring column as well, more on that soon.

2. Installation. I haven't posted about this at all, but that's the working title of an ambitious SC2 moba-like mod I'm working on. It's in the very early planning stages right now, but I'd like to see a rough design skeleton coalesce at the very least. It has potential to be great, but 90% perspiration and all that good stuff. Anyone can think of great ideas.

3. Doran's Workshop. I participate in ~2 playtest games daily for Riot then post feedback and ideas on the private forums. It's a pretty enlightening experience and has taught me a lot about how Riot treats the development process. It's also gotten me to focus a lot more intently on minor details number tweaks. I can't talk about the details but I can say that I've shone light on a few issues which have then been acted on.

4. Job applications. This is the good brunt of my focus. I've recently stumbled upon www.gamedevmap.com which is a fantastic resource. The site itself isn't perfect, I can't even filter by more than one category at a time. Jobs themselves are also hard to find, but I snap at any hint of an opening in either Design or failing that QA. "2 years industry experience" is the magic barrier I'm trying to break through.

I set this plan because I wasn't overpleased with my progress before. It's a new process but I'm confident it will work better than previous methods of self-discipline. Excelsior!
